Duties and Responsibilities

The Lieutenant Governor of Virginia is the second-highest-ranking official in the state government, after the Governor.

Their primary responsibilities are:

  • Presiding over the Virginia Senate
  • Serving as the Governor's deputy and successor
  • Promoting economic development and tourism

The Lieutenant Governor also serves as a member of the Board of Education and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

Other Roles

While presiding over the state’s Senate, the lieutenant governor is responsible for:

  • Maintaining order during sessions
  • Enforcing the Senate's rules
  • Deciding procedural questions
  • Casting tie-breaking votes
  • Appointing members to certain legislative committees
